06 · Compare your options
Create a simple course map: list each programme's required subjects, then add your completed courses, credits, grades and syllabus links beside them. This makes gaps visible and gives you the material needed for an application.
The differences can be substantial. UvA Finance's international route specifies prior finance coursework, while UvA Econometrics asks for advanced econometrics, time series and specified economics subjects. Erasmus also expects a combination of mathematical, statistical and econometric preparation. UvA Finance requirements, UvA Econometrics requirements, Erasmus requirements.
For mathematics routes, map proof-based preparation as well as applied courses. UvA's SFM guidance explicitly includes measure and integration theory; Delft's bridging guidance discusses analysis, algebra, differential equations and logical reasoning. UvA SFM requirements, Delft requirements.
Data science entry routes differ: Tilburg Data Science and Society builds on non-technical domain knowledge; Utrecht Applied Data Science requires credited statistics and programming; the two-year computing and AI routes expect deeper mathematics, algorithms or AI preparation. Match the degree to the courses you have already completed.
Also record the admissions route that applies to your qualification. For example, Tilburg's QFAS pre-master is open to eligible WO applicants and excludes Dutch HBO graduates, while Twente describes an HBO pre-master route. Tilburg entry routes, Twente entry routes.
07 · Make the final comparison
Use the same questions at every university to compare the experience you will actually get.
Record application deadlines separately for your intended intake, qualification and nationality. Housing and scholarship deadlines can arrive earlier: UvA's September 2027 admissions page, for example, lists different dates for applicants requesting housing or scholarships. UvA application schedule.
08 · Build evidence of your skills
Use electives, assignments and your thesis to build a coherent body of work. Choose a problem related to your target role, implement the method, evaluate the results and explain the decisions you made.
Separate training and test periods. Include transaction costs when evaluating a signal.
Check your implementation against a known benchmark and study numerical convergence.
Compare predicted and observed outcomes, then investigate where the model performs poorly.
These projects give you concrete material for applications and interviews: the question you investigated, the model you chose, the code you wrote and the results you can explain.
